ZAR® Platinum PRO Translucent Urethane Finish
ZAR® Platinum PRO Translucent Urethane Finish Overview
Preparation

Non-porous surfaces*
Surface must be clean, dry, pre-primed, and in good condition.

Wood surfaces*
Surface must be clean, dry, pre-primed, and in good condition. Be sure all loose, warped, or damaged boards are replaced before coating.

Non-primed wood surfaces*
The type and porosity of the wood used, how well the wood was saturated, and the number of coats when originally stained, and the weather conditions will all determine the wearability and recoat time of the coating. Use a soft bristle brush to remove dirt using a mild detergent (ratio: 13 cup per gallon of water). Don’t scrub too hard, damaging the boards. Dark staining from mold can be cleaned using a 3:1 water to bleach solution. Hose off with a strong spray or power wash at approximately 1200 psi. Use non-loading sandpaper to remove stubborn deposits or to scuff-up shiny, sunbaked surfaces that tend to repel stain. Fill cracks with a high-quality caulk.

Application

Primed wood and non-wood surfaces
Apply only when air and surface temperatures are above 50°F (10°C). DO NOT THIN. STIR THOROUGHLY (DO NOT SHAKE) before and during use. Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours. Avoid applying in direct sunlight. Test ZAR® Platinum PRO Translucent Exterior Urethane Finish on an inconspicuous area to determine final color.

ZAR® Platinum PRO Translucent Exterior Urethane Finish is formulated for one coat application. If a darker color is desired, apply a second coat, making sure to evaluate tests on the substrate to ensure the finish and color development are acceptable.

For best results, we recommend airless spray application using a Graco® Fine Finish Tip .010″-.014″. Pressure should be 2400 PSI achieving 5 – 7 wet-film-thickness (WFT).

On lap siding, start at the top on several boards and apply continuously using an east to west motion across to a break at a door, window, or corner. Be sure to maintain a wet edge. On panels, use a north to south spray motion. After spraying, the coating should be dry brushed or back rolled if necessary, for color uniformity.

The finish is not prone to sag, however, if you should see any evidence of this, immediately feather it out into the surrounding area with a clean, soft paintbrush.

Non-primed wood surfaces
Before applying ZAR® Platinum Pro Translucent Urethane Finish ensure that the wood is dry. Using a moisture meter, test the moisture. It should be less than 12% for interior surfaces and less than 15% for exterior surfaces. The wood’s final color will depend on the natural color of the wood prior to staining, be sure to test on a small section before applying it full-scale. If purchasing more than one gallon, blend the different batches for a uniform stain. Use a synthetic brush and/or roller (3/8″ – 12″) to apply stain to the wood surface (5 – 7 wet-film-thickness (WFT)), increasing penetration and making the stain adhere to the wood. When applying, try to remain in shaded areas. Apply across three to five rows of siding across the exterior wall’s entire width to help eliminate any lap marks. Start at the top, working downward..

Disposal
