Metal Door Made to Look like Wood
How to Give a Metal Door Woodgrain Using ZAR®
Preparation

New Wood
Sand smooth using fine sandpaper and vacuum any sanding dust.* Wipe it clean with a tack cloth or cloth dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits, and allow it to dry.

Old Finishes in Good Condition
Remove all dirt, oil, wax, polish, and grease with turpentine or a suitable solvent. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain to remove gloss.* Wipe it clean with a tack cloth or cloth dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits, and allow it to dry.

Old Finishes in Poor Condition, Lacquer or Shellac
Remove completely.* If the old finish contains wax or stearates, regardless of condition, remove it completely. Sand and remove sanding dust with tack rag or cloth dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits.

Interior surfaces of Stained Steel or Fiberglass Entry Doors
Do not sand stained door surfaces. Wood stain must be thoroughly dry.

Note: to ensure satisfactory results, always prepare a sample or test the product on an inconspicuous area to determine compatibility prior to completing the entire job. Do not apply over finishes containing stearates or aluminum oxide.

Application

Stir all sheens, except ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly Gloss, thoroughly before and during application. Do not shake. Apply straight from the can. Do not thin. Use a clean bristle brush or a lambswool applicator. Dip the brush in the can and let the excess drip off. Flow ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly on in the direction of the grain. Avoid over brushing which may trap air bubbles in the finish and result in streaks. Make the final pass of the applicator a skimming stroke across the entire surface. Apply thin coats at a rate of 500 – 600 square feet per gallon in the direction of the grain.

Floor Application
If floor is to be stained prior to applying ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly, let the stain dry according to the manufacturer’s directions. Areas with poor ventilation, such as closed rooms, corners and hallways, may take longer to dry. Prepare surface as above. Use a lambswool applicator and spread the finish towards the opposite wall, following the wood grain. When approaching the end of a run, turn the applicator towards you and spread out the excess material parallel to wet edge. Feather out all turns. For maximum protection, apply 3 coats of ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly. Allow floors to dry for 24 hours before subjecting to light foot traffic, and for 3 – 5 days before moderate (normal) traffic or moving furniture. To avoid marring the floor, lift and place furniture. One week is required before maximum resistance is achieved. Do not cover floors with rugs before 1 week has elapsed. If floors should become marred or scratched, simply sand lightly using fine sandpaper, vacuum any sanding dust, wipe clean with a tack cloth or microfiber cloth, and apply another coat to repair the finish.

11 oz. Spray Can Application
Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 65°F and 85°F. ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly spray cans should be shaken vigorously before and during application with the exception of the Gloss sheen. Practice on scrap wood to establish proper spray technique. Hold container 10 – 12 inches from the surface. Apply light, even strokes. If bubbles or runs occur, wipe them clean with paint thinner or mineral spirits. Allow each coat to dry for at least 2 hours. Drying time may vary due to temperature and humidity. Sand lightly, except for fiberglass or wood-grained metal surfaces. Remove sanding dust with a tack cloth or a clean rag dampened with mineral spirits. Reapply ZAR® Interior Oil Base Poly, a minimum of 3 coats. Allow the final coat to dry for 4 – 6 hours.

Disposal

Dispose of contaminated absorbent, container and unused contents in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
